Professor Piotr Sankowski, PhD DSc
Director of the Institute
Piotr Sankowski is a professor at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Warsaw, where he received his habilitation in 2009 and his doctorate in computer science in 2005. His research interests include algorithmics, with a particular focus on algorithmic graph analysis and data analysis algorithms. In 2009, Piotr Sankowski received his doctorate in physics in the field of solid state theory at the Polish Academy of Sciences. He was the first Pole to receive four grants from the European Research Council (ERC): ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grant (2010), ERC Proof of Concept Grant (2015, 2023), ERC Consolidator Grant (2017). He is a co-founder of the Highlights of Algorithms conference. From 2021 to 2024, he was president of IDEAS NCBR, where he led the working group “Intelligent Algorithms and Data Structures.” He is co-founder and CTO of the spin-off MIM Solutions. He is also a member of ELLIS Unit Warsaw with ELLIS Fellow status.
Professor Tomasz Trzciński, PhD DSc Eng.

Tomasz Trzciński obtained his PhD in machine vision at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2014, and a double master's degree at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the Politecnico di Torino. He is a Full Professor at Warsaw University of Technology, where he leads a Computer Vision Lab. He was an Associate Professor at Jagiellonian University of Krakow in years 2020-2023, and a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University in 2017 and at Nanyang Technological University in 2019 and 2024. He led a research group "Zero-waste machine learning in computer vision" at IDEAS NCBR from 2022 till 2025. Previously, he worked at Google in 2013, Qualcomm in 2012 and Telefónica in 2010. He frequently serves as a reviewer and area chair in major computer science conferences (CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, NeurIPS, ICML) and journals (TPAMI, IJCV, CVIU). He is a recipient of NeurIPS'25 Best Paper Award. He is a Senior Member of IEEE, Fellow of ELLIS Society and the director of ELLIS Unit Warsaw, member of the ALICE Collaboration at CERN and an expert of National Science Centre and Foundation for Polish Science. He co-founded and led several technology companies and startups, including Tooploox and Comixify.
